Campus utilization tips from students who know Aoyama Gakuin inside and out

The Campus Tour Guide Volunteer (CTGV) is a student volunteer group that guides high school students and their parents visiting both the Aoyama and Sagamihara campuses in a tour format. In this special feature, CTGV members will introduce the attractions and how to use the facilities and services on campus, which they know only because they are current students, based on their own experiences.

What you should know first as a student at Aoyama Gakuin University

Student Center

■Aoyama Campus: Building 17, 2nd floor

■ Sagamihara Campus: Building B, 1st floor

The Student Center is where you can get advice on all aspects of student life, such as academic matters within your faculty, scholarships, extracurricular activities, studying abroad, job hunting, etc., as well as procedures for issuing certificates (enrollment, grades, expected graduation, graduation) required for job hunting, etc., and student discount certificates (student discount certificates).

[Faculty office]
For procedures concerning classes, exams, grades, etc., please contact the faculty office at the Academic Affairs Division (Aoyama) or the Academic Affairs Division (Sagamihara).
It can be difficult for new students to register for courses and understand the university curriculum for the first time. In such cases, don't worry alone, but consult with the office of your faculty. I was also helped when I had trouble registering for courses online. Also, when I was a first-year student, I didn't realize that the classroom for my class had suddenly changed, so I rushed to the Academic Affairs Office, where a staff member kindly explained to me how to get to the new classroom, which was a great help. Also, when it comes to recommended classes, the opinions of seniors in your faculty can be helpful!

[Teacher Training Course]

For inquiries about obtaining a teaching license and qualifications for a teacher librarian, librarian, social education officer, or curator, please contact the Academic Affairs Department Teacher Training Course Division (Aoyama) or the Academic Affairs Department Teacher Training Course Division (Sagamihara). Those who wish to become teachers should not miss the "Teacher Recruitment Exam Preparation Course" organized by the Teacher Training Course Guidance Office. In addition to basic exam preparation such as essays and interviews, they also provide careful guidance according to the question trends of each local government. It is difficult to take a teacher training course while studying at an undergraduate level, but I was able to approach the teacher training course with peace of mind because they gave me careful advice according to the process, such as what to do and by when.

[Student Life]
If you have any worries or problems in your student life outside of your studies, please consult the Student Life Division. They can handle a variety of student consultations, such as extracurricular activities (clubs, circle activities, school festivals, etc.), advisor groups, and extracurricular education programs, and can support us so that we can have a fun and fulfilling student life. They can also issue student ID cards, student discount cards, and school commuter certificates, and can handle part-time work, student dormitories, changes to student information (address, phone number, email address, etc.), and accident insurance during educational and research activities. I often go to the office to get permission to use classrooms and campus facilities for circle activities. Unlike high school, in college, if you have a problem you want to solve, you need to take the initiative and not just wait. If you don't know what to do, feel free to visit the office. I'm sure they will be happy to help you with your concerns.

[Tuition and Scholarships]

The Tuition and Scholarship Division at the Aoyama Campus and the Student Life Division at the Sagamihara Campus are responsible for consultations and procedures regarding various scholarships and various inquiries regarding tuition payments.
For students, there are many parts of the scholarship and tuition system that are difficult to understand. If you go to the counter, the staff will immediately respond to any questions or procedures you may have, so you can rest assured!
There are two types of scholarships available at Aoyama Gakuin University: "grant scholarships" that do not need to be repaid, and "loan scholarships" that are repaid after graduation. There are scholarships that are primarily intended to provide financial support, and those that are intended to support academic achievement and extracurricular activities. It's a good idea to visit the scholarship counter casually.

Student cafeteria @Aoyama campus

■ "Ichi Nana Shokudo" Aoyama Campus: Building 17, 1st floor

■ "Chicana Shokudo" Aoyama Campus: Building 7, 1st basement floor

[17 Restaurant/Chicana Restaurant]
There are two student cafeterias on the Aoyama campus: "Ichinana" and "Chikanana." "Ichinana Shokudo" on the first floor of Building 17 has a wide variety of menu items, including daily set meals with stylish names such as "Aoyama Monogatari" and "Omotesando." My recommendation is the "Yulin-Tori." There are also a variety of seating options, including sofa-type chairs and long tables, making it the perfect place to spend your free time studying or chatting with friends.
Chikanana cafeteria on the first basement floor of Building 7 has a traditional menu that makes you think, "This is what a school cafeteria is all about!" In addition to Japanese set meals, fried chicken and chicken nanban, they also have a daily changing rice bowl that you'll never tire of, and of course the classic noodles and curries, all reasonably priced and filling, making them popular with boys. The oil soba noodles in particular are a must-try for freshmen. By the way, the curries and noodles at both Ichinana and Chikanana actually taste different, so try them out and compare!

Cafeteria (Student Dining Hall) @Sagamihara Campus

This spacious student cafeteria is divided into two floors, the first floor and the second floor, which also has terrace seating. It's reasonably priced and comfortable, and we recommend the terrace seats on the second floor, which have a great view on sunny days!
I go there almost every day I have classes, and I like the fact that there are relatively many seats available at any time, so I can relax with my friends without worrying about time. It's also convenient that there is a 7-Eleven next door. One of the cafeteria's biggest attractions is the "daily ice cream." They offer a different flavor of soft serve ice cream every day at a reasonable price, and the popular flavors often have long queues.

AGU Book Cafe (Nana Cafe)

■Aoyama Campus: Building 7, 1st floor

It's a space that combines a bookstore and a cafe, and there are seats with outlets where you can charge your PC or smartphone. I go here almost every day I come to the university. Unlike the library, you can talk to friends casually here, so it's convenient for studying for exams or working on assignments together. The cafe's drinks, bagels, hot sandwiches, and other snacks are all reasonably priced for students. They also sell limited-time drinks and food, and I personally look forward to the collaboration products with the lab of the Faculty of Cultural Policy Studies every time.
When I read new books for classes or assignments, I take notes on the main points of each chapter as I read, and Nana Cafe helps me stay motivated because I can buy books at the bookstore and sit at my desk right away. Another big attraction is that you can buy books at the bookstore at 10% off the regular price (you can also order them) by showing your student ID. 10% off is a big deal for a student.

Fitness Center

■Aoyama Campus: University Gymnasium, basement floor 1

■ Sagamihara Campus: Building H, 2nd floor

A training gym on campus. For a yearly registration fee of 3,000 yen, you can receive training support from specialized staff, nutritional consultations, group lessons, and even exercise instruction and advice tailored to your goals. Not only does it provide training instruction and nutritional support for sports club athletes, but students who do not belong to sports clubs can also use it freely. I use it to relieve my exercise urges, but it's nice to be able to exercise at my own pace. Also, training with friends is a different kind of fun than training alone, so I often invite friends over. In addition to machine training, there is space for group lessons such as yoga and boxercise, so if you are interested, please inquire.

Student Counseling Center / Health Management Center / Support Center for Students with Disabilities

■Aoyama Campus: Student Counseling Center/Health Management Center (Building 7, 1st floor) / Disability Student Support Center (Building 9, 1st floor)
■ Sagamihara Campus: Student Counseling Center (H Building 2nd floor) / Health Management Center (H Building 1st floor) / Disability Student Support Center (H Building 2nd floor)

This is a center that supports you to live a healthy student life both physically and mentally. At the Student Counseling Center, clinical psychology counselors will help you find solutions to mental health issues and various problems that arise in student life. The Health Management Center is responsible for regular health checkups, health consultations, and emergency treatment in case of emergency, and watches over the health of each and every student. For students with chronic illnesses, the Health Management Center will keep track of their current symptoms and condition through health checkups and online health surveys. Therefore, if any symptoms appear on campus, they will respond quickly. I also suffer from migraines, so I have been taken care of by them many times. I also appreciate the fact that I can take a rest until my symptoms subside when I am not feeling well. The Disability Student Support Center is a contact point for students who need academic support due to disabilities, long-term illnesses, injuries, etc. A specialized coordinator will contact and coordinate support with the relevant departments, such as the faculty you are enrolled in. If you need support, please feel free to contact us.

library

■Aoyama Campus: University Library

■ Sagamihara Campus: Building B, 1st to 3rd floors

The main library on the Aoyama campus and the Bandai Memorial Library on the Sagamihara campus have a combined collection of approximately 1.8 million books!
The library catalog "AURORA-OPAC" is available via the Internet, so you can search all books from your home computer or mobile phone. The library is an essential part of my student life as a history major. The library has out-of-print books, allows you to make copies of valuable documents, and has even purchased books that were not in the library's collection after I applied for them. I often use the library's reading room and the library study room in Building 8 for report assignments and self-study. There are also power outlets, so you can charge your computer while writing your report. The desks are spacious, which is very convenient when you need to spread out a lot of documents and refer to them. Many students use the library at the end of the semester when there are exams and report submission deadlines, so be sure to get a good seat early!
A new library is scheduled to open on the Aoyama Campus in 2024. We look forward to an even more fulfilling library experience at Aoyama University.

Academic Writing Center

■Aoyama Campus: Building 9, 1st floor

■ Sagamihara Campus: Building B, Library, 2nd floor

One of the things that can be confusing when you become a university student is how to write reports and presentation materials. At the Academic Writing Center, graduate student tutors will teach you one-on-one about how to write academic documents and the know-how to do so. Not only completed documents, but also incomplete documents or documents that you have not written at all are OK. You will also receive a lot of advice that will help you improve your writing skills, so if you use the service continuously, you will be able to feel your writing skills improving. All tutors are graduate students at Aoyama University, so they have a deep understanding of Aoyama Standard Subjects, which is a nice point. I have had lively conversations with tutors who have taken the same classes as me. Each session lasts 30 to 45 minutes. You can easily make a reservation from your smartphone or computer, and you can use the service not only in person but also online from home or on the go.

Learning Commons (AIM Commons) & Support Lounge

■Aoyama Campus: Building 2, 1st and 2nd floors

■ Sagamihara Campus: Building B, 4th floor

The Learning Commons (AIM Commons) is a study space that can be used for various purposes, from individual use to group use and video conferencing. There are movable tables with electrical outlets and computers installed, so you can take online classes and do your assignments here. You can also borrow laptops, peripherals, and video recording equipment such as 4K cameras, and you can use high-performance PC booths where you can edit videos. The rental lockers are also convenient, as you can borrow a laptop just by holding up your student ID. I borrow them when I have a lot of luggage. There are workshops on video editing and design software that are sometimes held here, and watching other students discuss things on the whiteboard is a great way to get inspired. If you have any questions about how to operate or use a computer, please visit the Support Lounge. Staff will kindly help you.

Broaden your horizons!

International Center

■Aoyama Campus: Building 17, 2nd floor

■ Sagamihara Campus: Building B, 1st floor

The International Center provides various support for students to learn globally, such as exchange programs, overseas internships, language training, and exchanges between Japanese and international students. Students who wish to study abroad should check out the materials that summarize the experiences of students who have studied abroad. The International Center also recruits volunteer students to be "tutors" who support international students from overseas in both their studies and daily life. I am also a tutor, and I go to the ward office with international students to handle paperwork and go out for ramen. The International Center also operates "chat rooms" and "COFFEE MEETING!", which allow international exchange through communication in foreign languages (English, Chinese, Korean, etc.) on both the Aoyama and Sagamihara campuses. If you want to improve your language skills or are thinking about studying abroad, please take advantage of these opportunities to have intercultural exchange while on campus.

Civic Engagement Center

■Aoyama Campus: Building 1, 1st floor

■ Sagamihara Campus: Building F, 2nd floor

If you're a university student and you're thinking, "I want to try volunteering while I'm here!" then head to the Civic Engagement Center! There are pamphlets about various volunteering opportunities here, and staff are happy to answer any questions you may have. I used it when I participated in a cleaning event around campus organized by a volunteer club on campus. I wasn't a member of the club, but the club provided all the necessary equipment, so I was able to participate easily. The center also provided some gifts, and I used it as a rest area where participants could interact with each other. The center also provides consultation for students who are thinking of starting a new volunteer team.

Career and Employment Center

■Aoyama Campus: Building 17, 2nd floor

Career and Employment Division

■ Sagamihara Campus: Building B, 1st floor

The Career and Employment Center provides career support to students in many ways, such as holding various employment events such as joint company information sessions and seminars that are a chance to learn about various industries, providing timely employment information, and providing friendly individual consultations. I was very grateful for the individual consultations. When I was continuing my job search without a clear idea of what kind of work I wanted to do, my horizons were broadened through conversations with the staff, and I began to see what I wanted to value, and from there I gradually decided on my career path. The center also provides advice on mock interviews and application forms, and offers a trial course on group discussions, which are difficult to practice on your own, so it was very helpful to be able to prepare practically for job hunting. Many Aoyama Gakuin alumni participate in the information sessions and seminars hosted by the center, and they are happy to answer questions from juniors, allowing you to feel the power of Aoyama Gakuin in society.

"Campus Tour Guide Volunteer (CTGV)"
introduction

We, the Campus Tour Guide Volunteers (CTGV), are a student volunteer group under the direct control of the Admissions and Public Relations Office. In addition to regular tours every Saturday, in 2022 we held large-scale tour events during the spring and summer holidays. Through weekly lunchtime meetings, twice-yearly training sessions, and events such as the school festival, we deepen our friendships with our members and improve our tour skills. This time, our members introduced the charms of Aoyama Gakuin University online using their respective "areas of expertise." We hope that this message was conveyed to the new students.
