Diverse learning environments expand intellectual curiosity.
In 2024, Maclay Memorial Hall, a comprehensive academic information facility that brings together the Main Library, Information and Media Center, and Academic Writing Center into one building, was opened on Aoyama Campus as a place for students to expand their knowledge.
A platform for knowledge that expands the imagination and fosters creativity. Depending on the purpose of their studies, students use either private rooms where they can concentrate alone or open areas where they can study with their peers. Furthermore, they say that the open, comfortable space heightened their motivation to learn, and they naturally began spending more time at Maclay Memorial Hall between classes, studying for exams, and participating in seminar activities.
How are students using it? We'll introduce it through videos and interview comments featuring Aogaku.

Students use the computers between classes, to study for exams, and for seminar activities. "Before I knew it, I was spending more time at university," they say.
For me Maclay Memorial Hall is a place you'll want to stop by if you have some free time. Before that, I spent most of my time in the cafeteria or the lounge in Building 17, but now I use them not only for self-study, but also for doing assignments while chatting with friends and for seminars. We spent a lot of time at Maclay Memorial Hall for its multi-purpose uses. I especially like the fifth floor, and love the private rooms where I can concentrate and the space where I can relax and put my computer.

Maclay Memorial Hall not only functions as a library, but also has a variety of learning functions, such as studying with friends and meeting with seminar colleagues. Both the exterior and interior are stylish, and any student can use it easily. I use the different study spaces on each floor depending on my mood that day. You can either work on your assignments alone or have a lively discussion with your friends. It's great that it can accommodate a variety of learning styles. Another difference from previous libraries is that we can now hold discussions in addition to assignments. What's more, the open atmosphere makes it extremely comfortable. I use it freely and to the fullest!

When we think of a library, we tend to think of a closed-off place, but Maclay Memorial Hall which has a variety of learning functions for students, is not like that at all. It is clean, functional, and comfortable. I began to actively go to the Macrae Memorial Maclay Memorial Hall on Aoyama Campus, not only for my departmental assignments, but also to use it for job-hunting preparations and other occasions.

The opening of Maclay Memorial Hall has greatly changed my campus life. I often work on assignments and study for exams on campus when there are no classes or after school, and in the past I mainly used the cafeteria or empty classrooms. The former are a bit noisy and not very suitable for concentrating on studying, and the latter require a lot of effort to find an empty classroom. However, the new Maclay Memorial Hall solved all my problems in one fell swoop.
The building has one basement floor and six aboveground floors, and there are many seats available for students to use, so you will hardly have any trouble finding an empty seat. There are also areas where conversation is prohibited, so you can easily go there when you want to concentrate on your work alone.

I often use it to do reports and study for exams, but I change the area I use depending on my mood and purpose that day. For example, when I want to work leisurely I can sit in the open seats by the windows, when I want to concentrate more I can sit in a private room with a partition, and when I want to study while discussing with friends I can sit in the area where conversation and snacks are allowed. Different spaces can be used depending on various needs, so everyone can be comfortable according to their purpose. In addition, private-like spaces are available by reservation, and there is also an open and bright terrace seating and a room perfect for preparing group presentations.
Thanks to Maclay Memorial Hall, I have been able to make better use of the little free time I have. Also, being able to study in a comfortable environment has increased my motivation for exams and assignments, and I feel I can concentrate better on my work.
As it is a newly built facility, it is beautiful and clean. There are many glass-walled areas and stylish lighting, and the exterior and interior look just like a corporate office.
The vast lounge on the first floor is also a recommended spot. This is not a library area, so you do not need a student ID to enter. You can just drop in and use it whenever you like. Just like the library, this lounge has a variety of seating options, including sofa seats for a relaxing break and spacious, comfortable booth seats, and many students can be seen using different areas depending on their purpose.
I often use the museum after classes to wait for club activities to start. I spend my time not only studying, but also exchanging information with friends and taking a rest, spending meaningful time in the open space. I strongly recommend Maclay Memorial Hall to all new students as a place worth visiting first when you enter Aogaku.

Many of the UK's libraries are historical buildings, and famous ones such as Oxford University have beautiful exteriors. However, the interiors of historical libraries are not always comfortable and often not user-friendly due to their age. Conversely, modern libraries, which are functional and comfortable inside, often lack beautiful exteriors.
However, Aoyama Gakuin University 's Maclay Memorial Hall beautifully harmonizes both. Its magnificent glass exterior is reminiscent of London's financial district, and the view of central Tokyo unfolds from there. The entire campus is designed to feel like your own private terrace, and the interior is a warm and comfortable space... My first impression of Maclay Memorial Hall was "breathtaking." In English, the word would be "spectacular." Although this word is normally used for grander events or individual achievements, I feel that this word is perfectly suited to the Maclay Memorial Hall.

And Maclay Memorial Hall made me feel as familiar as if I were at a library in my home country. I was able to use the library without having to deal with the language barrier or being unable to find the book or room I was looking for, which are common problems when using a library in a foreign country. It was truly amazing that I was able to use the library so smoothly, even though I was in a foreign cultural environment like Japan.
The staff and students are all very kind, and the atmosphere is wonderful, with a warm welcome for us international students. It is also wonderful that they are considerate of people with disabilities and those who are feeling stressed. Such awareness is increasing in Europe and the United States, and I am happy to know that similar efforts are being made in Japan.
Another reason I particularly like this library is the "ambiance" of the space. I noticed that the lighting design was carefully designed to suit each space, with the quiet areas having calm, warm lighting that is bright enough for reading and studying, and the social areas having brighter lighting.
Now, I go to the Maclay Memorial Hall Library every day. I can almost say that my hobby is studying and reading in the library. I go there from 9am to 9:40pm on weekdays, until 9pm on Saturdays, and from 12pm to 7pm on Sundays. Of course, I prioritize my classes, shopping, the gym, church, and other schedules, so I'm not "confined to the library"!
My favorite place is the "Silent Room" on the 5th floor. When I'm studying for exams, when I'm swamped with assignments, when I want to relax after a day of exhaustion both physically and mentally... During my time studying abroad, this room has helped me so many times, allowing me to concentrate in complete silence and solitude. I really wanted to keep this room a secret, but I'd like to share it with you today for those of you who are about to start your student life at Aoyama Gakuin University.
Message from the staff
A place where students can learn in a variety of ways to meet their needs.
When you enroll, please come and have a look around the library.
Library staff
Congratulations to all the new students! Based on the concept of an "activity-based library," Maclay Memorial Hall considers what activities users want to do and creates spaces that fit those activities. When you enroll, please take a look around the library and check out the wide range of materials, the desks and chairs you will use, and the variety of study rooms.
Once you have found materials that interest you or a place that you like, we hope you will take the time to enjoy a relaxing time in the library. In your first year, there will be many classes that require group work, such as the "Introductory Seminar," so if necessary, try reserving a group study room in the library via the library website"MyLibrary." There are also many language-related classes, so we recommend using the "Reading Room" to practice presentations in a foreign language. Also, if you feel like taking a break as you get used to your new university environment, why not relax in a seat with a legroom and read your favorite book?
We hope you will make full use of the library for your own benefit, but we have one request: please be considerate of the feelings of other students and follow the rules for each area and the etiquette of the library.
In addition to the diverse "information" functions that satisfy intellectual curiosity,
One of the things we pride ourselves on at Maclay Memorial Hall is creating a comfortable environment.
Information and Media Center Staff
Maclay Memorial Hall, which combines the functions of a library and an information media center, is a facility filled with all of our university's academic information. It has a variety of functions that are different from the libraries and information classrooms you'll find in high schools, so please find the time to thoroughly explore Maclay Memorial Hall from the upper to lower floors.
A major feature of Maclay Memorial Hall is its environmental design, which seeks to make users comfortable. A natural ventilation system has been installed to reduce the environmental impact, and while the lighting is generally subdued, stand lights and other fixtures ensure sufficient brightness for reading and studying. There are power outlets in various places in the building, and the lounge on the first floor has several portable batteries (which can also be used for computers) that students can use freely.
If there's something you want to look up for class, head to the computer lab on the first floor! Use the computers provided to search the internet, and if you want to look into it more deeply, you can read specialized books on the upper floors to resolve your questions and satisfy your intellectual curiosity. The lounge on the first floor is also equipped with movable tables and chairs, as well as a large monitor, so you can look back on your classes together in groups while looking at the big screen, and is used by many senior students. We hope you will make full use of Maclay Memorial Hall. If there's anything you don't understand, please don't hesitate to ask the staff.
