Aogaku TV

Connecting students, faculty, alumni, and society at large

In recent years, social interest in video sites has increased, and many organizations are working on video production. Our university has been at the forefront of media collaboration, such as inviting NHK's studio to Aoyama Studio (established in 2009) near Aoyama Campus. As part of this activity, we launched the internet television "Aogaku Aogaku TV, explaining the background to its launch, its educational significance, and the voices of student staff.

What is Aogaku TV?

Under the guidance of Professor Norio Iguchi of School of Cultural and Creative Studies, a group of volunteer students are creating videos to widely disseminate information about our university. The concept is "Connecting, Connecting, Aogaku TV." A major feature of the show is its combination of a university education perspective and entertainment value, and it currently plays a part in our university's public relations activities. With a professional director as a production advisor, they produce videos ranging from the latest campus news to interviews with celebrities. The diverse content is attracting attention.

In addition to video production, I am also in charge of reporting. Last year, most of the classes were online due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so I thought about what I could do remotely, and as a result, I wanted to deliver a refreshing atmosphere, so I appeared in a video playing the ukulele from the beach in my hometown of Katsurahama, Kochi Prefecture. Aogaku TV also values playfulness, and through conversations with the director, I have come to see "playfulness = a person's natural charm." When I think about it that way, I feel like I can enjoy anything without being pretentious. In the future, I work every day with the goal of becoming an announcer who can spread the charm of Kochi to the whole country.

I mainly work as a reporter, but as I have been trying new ways to convey information in an appealing way, my interests have broadened, and recently I have also started to take on planning and directing. The responsibility of carrying the banner of Aogaku TV sometimes makes me want to play it safe, but with the support of director Ozawa-san, I am always able to take on new challenges. Having discovered the joy of delivering information on Aogaku TV, I am aiming to become a news announcer. The experience of conveying information passionately and looking at myself objectively through the screen has been particularly useful when I am interviewing for a job.

The encounters and experiences I gained at Ekiden Times have been a great source of inspiration

From the perspective of watching over student staff

Combining educational and entertainment value connects universities and society

Professor, School of Cultural and Creative Studies Department of Cultural and Creative Studies, General Manager Editor, Aogaku TV

Norio Iguchi

In 2008, our university established School of Cultural and Creative Studies with an eye on the future of media, and has also focused on "information dissemination by individuals" as typified by SNS. "Aogaku TV" was launched in this context, with the Iguchi Lab and Ohfusa Lab of School of Cultural and Creative Studies as its bases. Therefore, we place emphasis on an educational perspective in our activities.

Currently, there are about 40 volunteer staff members. Each member receives advice from a professional director and handles all aspects of the program, from planning to performing. As a result, some students have gone on to find employment at TV stations and program production companies.

The next thing we value is entertainment value. Only when content is "interesting" can it attract people's attention and connect with society. Aoyama Gakuin University 's official mascot, "Gin-Nyan," and Aogaku TV's original mascot, "Aoitori," are symbols of this.

As of the beginning of 2021, the site had 200,000 visitors, 4.7 million video views, 15,000 YouTube channel subscribers, and 855 videos produced. Aogaku TV has become an important media infrastructure at the university. Recently, there have been many inquiries from prospective students, and the response has spread beyond the university, with high school students and younger making up 16% of the audience.

Aogaku TV is supported by the participation of everyone at our university. There are many ways to participate, such as as a student staff member or by posting videos. If you are interested, please contact us.

I want to convey to students the true joy of program production.

Aogaku TV Director

Kazushi Ozawa

He gives students advice on video production based on his knowledge as a professional video director. Aogaku TV aims to provide content that goes beyond the scope of university public relations while still having an educational perspective, and can be enjoyed as entertainment for the general public. He wants students to experience the fun of video production through the comments from viewers such as "That program was fun!"

The project starts with a student planning meeting, and ultimately uses YouTube analytics to provide objective feedback. This is how the video series "Aogaku Gakuin Ekiden Times" was born. The series has garnered attention and has been highly praised for its entertainment value, with over 10,000 subscribers in just a few months since its launch.

Aogaku TV will continue to deliver not only education and research, but also real-life information about Aogaku. We hope you will continue to tune in.
