A new spring
In welcoming
For a smooth start to the new year
The new academic year has finally begun. The new academic year at universities is full of energy, but at the same time, this is also a time when troubles are likely to occur. In this article, we will introduce the Student Life Department *, the administrative organization in charge of supporting students in their daily lives. We will tell you about the points to be aware of in order to smoothly transition into your new life, and also introduce specific places to consult when you are in trouble.
*Student Life Department: The Student Life Department (Sagamihara Administrative Office Student Life Division at the Sagamihara Campus) is an administrative organization that supports the overall life of students studying at our university. The Student Life Department has a desk at the Student Center to respond to inquiries from students, and also handles welfare-related tasks such as scholarship procedures and health support. In addition, the department supports extracurricular activities such as clubs, societies, advisory groups, and volunteering, helping to make student life more fulfilling.
Please note that the Academic Affairs Department (Sagamihara Administrative Office Academic Affairs Division at the Sagamihara Campus) will be in charge of any consultations regarding study-related matters such as course planning and credit acquisition.

Message to students at the start of the new academic year
At this time of year, you are probably filled with excitement about your new life. However, your new university life is also a time when students who are unfamiliar with society are likely to get into various troubles. In order to avoid unnecessary trouble and live your student life with peace of mind, we would like to tell you about some points you should be aware of.
■ Beware of malicious solicitations
There have been reported cases of unauthorized off-campus groups soliciting students for clubs, seminars (for investment, self-improvement, job-hunting assistance), religions, etc.
Please be careful not to exchange contact information without careful consideration.
■ Beware of contract troubles
As of April 2022, the age of majority under the Civil Code has been lowered to 18. While people over the age of 18 can now enter into various contracts at their own discretion without parental consent, this will no longer apply to those under the age of 19 who are currently entitled to the "right of minors to cancel a contract (in principle, the right to cancel a contract if a minor enters into a contract without parental consent)." Going forward, contractual liability will be The contractor bears the cost As a result, you should exercise more caution than ever before when entering into a contract and acquire the necessary legal knowledge in advance.
■ Follow the rules
Although the age of majority is now 18, drinking and smoking are prohibited by law until the age of 20. Opportunities to consume alcohol will likely increase in your daily life, but you should still drink in moderation even after turning 20. Additionally, commuting to campus by any means other than public transportation is prohibited. Be fully aware of your status as an adult and abide by the law, campus rules, and social etiquette as you spend your time at university.
In addition to the above information, we have posted a guidebook called "Student Life is Full of Dangers" on the official university app. We have also distributed a leaflet called "Aoyama Gakuin Harassment Prevention Guidelines." Please check those as well.
As of April 2022, the age of majority under the Civil Code has been lowered to 18. Please be fully aware of your status as an adult and abide by the law, campus rules, and social etiquette during your university life.
If you have any problems, please contact the Student Center.
If you have any worries, troubles, or concerns about your student life, please feel free to contact the Student Center (Aoyama Campus: University Building 17, 2nd floor, Sagamihara Campus: Building B, 1st floor) which is our student consultation desk. If necessary, we will work with specialized departments and staff on campus to deal with the situation. We will protect the personal information and confidentiality of those who come to us for consultation, so please feel free to contact us.
At the Student Counseling Center (Aoyama Campus, 1st floor of Building 7; Sagamihara Campus, 2nd floor of Building H), which is an organization of the Student Life Division, licensed clinical psychologists are always on hand to provide advice on mental health issues and personal growth, such as "I can't make friends," "I'm worried about the future," "I'm worried about gender or LGBT," "I want to be able to express myself more," and "I want to think about independence." In recent years, the number of consultations has increased due to the impact of COVID-19, so we are increasing our staff and working to further strengthen our system.
The Disability Student Support Center (Aoyama Campus: 1st floor, Building 9; Sagamihara Campus: 2nd floor, Building H) works with relevant departments, organizations, and institutions to provide comprehensive support to students who require support due to a disability, long-term illness, injury, etc., so that they can have the same educational and research opportunities as other students.
The Health Management Center (1st floor, Building 7 on the Aoyama Campus, 1st floor, Building H on the Sagamihara Campus) not only provides regular health checkups and responds to emergencies on campus, but also supports student health by providing health guidance to students and planning health seminars and events.
The Student Center (Student Life Department, Tuition and Scholarships Section, or Sagamihara Campus, Sagamihara Administrative Office, Student Life Section) also accepts consultations regarding scholarships. Please contact us if you are experiencing difficulties in continuing your studies due to financial circumstances.
If you have any worries or problems during your student life, please feel free to contact the Student Center.
In addition, the Student Life Department supports students' lives in various ways. In addition to various club activities and university-recognized hobby groups (circles) for sports and cultural activities, one example is support for extracurricular activities such as volunteering. The "Civic Engagement Center (formerly the Volunteer Center)" was born from student volunteer activities in the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, but has expanded its scope of activities every year since then to its current form. In addition, the "Service Learning I, II, and III" courses in the "Aoyama Standard" university-wide common education system, which is unique to the university, work in cooperation with the center to link university learning with social contributions, while engaging with NPOs, NGOs, local civic groups, and a variety of people, developing into independent activities and learning. We will continue to strengthen the connection with our university's classes and educational curriculum and expand our activities. Another initiative unique to our university is the "Advisor Group (commonly known as Ad-Guru)." Ad-Guru is a place where advisory faculty and students can interact across departmental boundaries, and is a unique activity of our university that is different from seminars and hobby groups. Activity themes are varied and based on the interests of each group member, including food culture, art, and social issue research.
The Fitness Center (located in the basement of Aoyama Gakuin Memorial Hall on the Aoyama Campus and on the second floor of Building H on the Sagamihara Campus) was established with the aim of promoting the health of students. It is equipped with aerobic machines for burning fat and improving cardiopulmonary function, weight machines, a fitness room equipped with free weights, and an athlete's room, and a professional trainer is always on hand to provide guidance. All students of the university can use the extensive training facilities, just like any other sports club, for an annual membership fee of 3,000 yen.
These wide-ranging extracurricular activities are considered important at our university as they help to further develop the humanity of our students.
An example of activities at the Volunteer Center. During volunteer activities carried out by student staff, they listened to the stories of the earthquake disaster from people who had escaped the tsunami.
Additionally, since 2018, the Student Life Department has been disseminating information through the official Aoyama Gakuin University app, "Lifein Aoyama," exclusively for Aoyama Gakuin students. Previously, to disseminate campus information, pamphlets were created and distributed at the counter, but in 2018, the official app was introduced to improve convenience. The app provides a wide range of information, from administrative procedures to information on campus events and announcements from club and hobby activities. Information on scholarships and volunteering can also be checked as e-books from the app. The app, which provides information necessary for student life, is downloaded and used by many Aoyama Gakuin students, and appears to function as an infrastructure for student life.
In recent times of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Student Life Department has been receiving many COVID-19-related inquiries, so we have been providing consultations via an online form. As the number of COVID-19-related inquiries continues to increase, we have continued to develop a dedicated AI chatbot as one of the goals to reduce student anxiety. We launched the chatbot service in April 2022.
Since 2018, information has been provided through the official app "Lifein Aoyama" exclusively for Aoyama Gakuin students.
Learning support
The Student Center's faculty office is available to assist with any academic consultations regarding course planning, credit acquisition, etc. Upon enrollment, a guidance session is held for new students, but we are also available to answer any questions that may be unclear during guidance sessions or to provide individual consultations.
The most prominent consultation from new students is about how to create a timetable (course enrollment consultation). Unlike high school, at university you have to combine the necessary subjects and create your own course plan, so many new students seem to be confused by this new task. We also receive many inquiries about submitting reports, what to do if you miss an exam, and how to confirm the number of credits you have earned. For students who are likely to fall short of the number of credits required for promotion or graduation, faculty and staff from the student's department will communicate with them and hold individual support interviews. We also work with related departments to handle consultations regarding studying abroad, taking a leave of absence, teacher training courses, and employment.
Faculty office (Aoyama Campus Student Center)
If you have any questions about your studies, please feel free to contact the Student Center office of your faculty.
There have been cases where students were unsure about their course plans and asked friends for advice, only to find that their answers were incorrect, resulting in a lack of the number of credits required to advance to the next grade. To obtain accurate information, please first consult with the Student Center office of your faculty.

Other facilities and systems to support university life
University Library
There are two libraries, the main library on the Aoyama Campus and the Bandai Memorial Library on the Sagamihara Campus, and both libraries are available for use. The library has a collection of 1.8 million books, and the book catalog AURORA-OPAC is available to both inside and outside the university through the library website. Basic services such as ordering books, reserving and extending books can be completed on the library website. Many contents, such as databases that allow you to efficiently search for information needed for reports and exams, electronic journals and e-books, are also available on the library website. In addition, the library offers a wide range of services, including various orientations that are useful for study and research, ordering materials from other universities, and guidance on research at the reference counter.

Career and employment support
We support students' diverse career paths and provide flexible and accurate career support that looks beyond graduation. We also focus on support activities for first and second year students so that they can think about their future from an early stage and develop a career outlook and work ethic. We provide systematic support to help students make "satisfactory career choices."
